Brooklyn    NYPD has arrested a driver responsible for the death of a cyclist that occurred on Ave L and Coney Island Ave on August 11, 2019.

Arrested: Baig, Mirza 18-year-old male, 63-29 Ellwell Crescent from Queens, New York

On Sunday, August 11, 2019, at approximately 1227 p.m., police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue L, within the confines of the 70th Precinct. Upon arrival, responding officers encountered an unconscious 52-year-old male bicyclist with trauma to the head/body, a 52-year-old male pedestrian with an injured left leg and a 39-year-old male operator with trauma to the body.

Hatzolah responded to the location and transported the bicyclist to NYC Health and Hospital/Coney Island where he was pronounced deceased. The operator and the pedestrian were removed to Maimonides Medical Center in stable condition.

The preliminary investigation conducted by NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that an 18-year-old male operator of a 2019 Dodge Charger was traveling southbound on Coney Island Avenue when he collided with the 39-year-old operator of a 2018 Honda SUV that was traveling eastbound on Avenue L. The collision caused the SUV to diagonally slide onto the southeast corner of the intersection, where it struck the aforementioned bicyclist and debris struck the pedestrian. The investigation is ongoing.
