A devastating fire raged through the roof of Congregation Kneses Israel of Sea-Gate synagogue, Thursday morning during Passover. The fire started around midnight Thursday according to fire officials.
Two non-life threatening injuries were reported.
Nine Torah scrolls and other religious artifacts were safely removed. One of the Torah Scrolls was previously saved from water during Hurricane Sandy, making this the second miraculous saving – this time from fire.
Witnesses tell Simon Gifter that FDNY was not called until approximately 30 minutes after reports of a smoke condition. Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire at this time.
