Brooklyn      A tractor-trailer driver was arrested Wednesday after his rig fatally struck a 71-year-old man in Brooklyn, officials said.

Police charged Glbert Demello, 54, of Ohio, with failure to yield and failure to exercise due care when his 18-wheeler ran over the victim in a crosswalk at McDonald Ave. and Cortelyou Road in Kensington around 7 a.m.

The truck was making a right turn onto McDonald Ave. from Cortelyou Road when it ran the 71-year-old man over while crossing in the crosswalk and dragged him for more than 20 feet, horrified witnesses said.

Collision scene:

“He was trying to cross faster than the truck,” said witness Javier Pagan, 47. “He was trying to beat the truck and he tripped.” Other witnesses said they can’t understand how the driver did not see the man crossing the street.

The victim was heading to Yeshiva Derech Chaim for his daily morning coffee after morning prayer (Shachris) at Rabbi Bluth shul on E.2 St and Cortelyou Road.

The victim died at the scene. Misaskim was on the scene for proper Kavod HaNiftar.

Demello remained at the scene and refused to speak to reporters.
