A major water main break is snarling traffic and causing heavy delays in and around JFK Airport on Wednesday. Travelers are being warned to leave plenty of extra time to make their flights.
The water main burst just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning on the outbound Van Wyck Expressway, closing the ramp to the road, and forcing traffic to exit the airport via the JFK Expressway instead.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police have been directing traffic all day and will continue to do so until emergency repairs are complete.
The significant delays continued into Wednesday evening, as Port Authority crews worked to fix the roadway and assess damage. JFK personnel tell GifterInGotham that work will be done throughout the night but do not have an exact timetable for completion of the work.
The Port Authority urged travelers to take the AirTrain to the airport, and asked all drivers traveling to JFk airport to allow an extra 45 minutes.
Some MTA buses were re routed.
